Challenging Stigma Through Storytelling
Sharing the stories of people with lived and living experiences of mental health complexities, substance use, and criminalization.
BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS) partnered with the Health Design Lab at Emily Carr University in the co-creation of this three-part animated video series. The series explores the roles that families play in their loved one’s journeys as well as their own paths towards healing.
Watch the full videos alongside an interview with Shirley Chan, one of the three storytellers, on the BCMHSUS Website.

A partnership between HDL + BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services
Both teams collaborated to design and facilitate a series of virtual workshops involving families of people with mental health and substance use experiences to increase awareness of these under-represented perspectives within our communities.
Throughout the discussions, storytellers were asked questions about the stigma they experienced as family members assisting their loved ones in navigating complex systems, as well as questions about their personal healing journeys.
